Beurré Clairgeau is a large(12–18 oz), conical French dessert/cooking pear. with rough, russetted, golden-brown to yellow skin and an orange-red blush. It is not a traditional perry pear but a heavy-cropping, firm, and slightly musky pear used for cooking. The flesh is firm, white, and slightly granular.
Picked in mid-autumn it has good storage properties.
The tree is compact, upright, and hardy and is a heavy, reliable cropper although it does requires a warm spot to ripen properly. Thrives in a warm, sheltered position.
Not self-fertile. It belongs to pollination group 2.
It was raised by Pierre Clairgeau in Nantes, France, around 1830. While it was popular historically and sold for its size and flavour, it is not listed among traditional perry pear varieties.
