17. Egremont Russet - Dessert Apple
The skin is a dull yellow colour with dry, rough russeting all over the apple.
The flesh is pale cream and dense rather than crisp. It tastes rather like a slightly unripe pear but sweet at the same time.
Does not store well.
Season: Blossom relatively early, in April, harvest Sept - Oct. The early blossom can be susceptible to late frosts
Pollination: Partially self fertile, but will benefit from pollination partners - Group B
Rootstock: Our tree is grown on MM106 rootstock for vigour.
This variety is sometimes sold in supermarkets but the accompanying cold storage for months does nothing for the flavour or texture. Picked straight from the tree or stored for no longer than a month, Egremont Russet is a deliciously different apple. Tastes superb with cheese.
It was first recorded in 1872, and is believed to have been raised by the Earl of Egremont at Petworth in Sussex, UK.
Surprising disease resistance even for a Victorian apple tree.
Malus domestica 'Egremont Russet'
The definitive English russet apple, with the charateristic sweet/dry "nutty" flavour.
