46. Summer Golden Pippin - Apple
Season : Flowers in May, Fruits in August-Sept.
Pollination : Self Sterile - Group B
Malus domestica 'Summer Golden Pippin’
One of the oldest English apples available
- a rich fruity flavour with a hint of lemon
The fruits are quite small by modern standards, with a rather attractive light green / golden yellow skin, speckled with russet.
It has an intense fruity tang, a concentrated blend of sweetness and acidity.
An excellent early season variety.
Like many old varieties, Golden Pippin is prized both for eating fresh and for cooking - although smaller than most cooking apples. It keeps well.
The juicy strong flavoured flesh also lends itself to juicing and cider blends.
Highly prized in the 1800's, but Golden Pippin was known in the 1700s and is probably even older.
Origin unknown, but likely UK.
