Notes

Pyrus communis ‘Beurre Clairgeau’

A good dual purpose variety but needing a warm location

The fruit can be quite large, and is long and assymetrical with the short fleshy stalk being ‘off centre’.  The skin is rough and dry.

Its flesh is white, juicy, sweet, slightly fragrant, slightly grainy at the center.  It keeps well in cold storage for up to 4 months.

A good eating pear, and the juicy-ness and fragrance make it a useful addition to perry.  Reliable heavy crops in the right situation.

Also also known Clairgeau Nantes, this variety resulted from a chance seedling found  around 1838 by Pierre Clairgeau, a gardener in Nantes .

Its was first reported in 1848, the tree having  been purchased by a Belgian horticulturist,  who became the real promoter.

‘Buerre’, french for butter, refers to the soft, sweet taste - which develops best in a warm and sunny situation.
