40. Marjories Seedling - Plum

Season : Late - picking from September through into October

Pollination :  Self Fertile Group E

Rootstock : Pixy

Notes :

Prunus domestica 'Marjorie's Seedling'

 A reliable and heavy cropper.

The main late-season plum grown in the UK

An attractive tree with an upright habit.

The fruit is large, plum-shaped(!), and purple, becoming blue-black when fully ripe, with an attractive heavy bloom.

The flesh is greenish-yellow, juicy, quite coarse, and noticeably veined, white, with a good strong plum taste. The stone is clinging.

It is a good culinary plum (especially for jam), but also good for eating fresh when fully ripe.  The plum should be left on the tree for as long as possible for the sweetest flavour -  and there are not many others around this late in the season

Found by G W Layley at Hillfoot Farm, Beenham, Berkshire, UK in 1912 and introduced in 1928.

Adopted and still grown as a commercial variety in the UK.

It is hardy and disease resistant, and the late flowers make it less vulnerable to spring frosts.
