42. Jupiter - Dessert Apple

Season :  Harvest Sept/Oct

Pollination : Self Sterile. Triploid.   Group D

Rootstock :  MM106

Notes :

Malus domestica 'Jupiter'

One of the best Cox-stye apples, with a  robust aromatic flavor

The apple skin is greenish-yellow turning golden yellow and flushed with orange-red stripes.  The fruit can be irregular shape and heavily russetted

It has  cox-like flavour, but sharper and possibly more aromatic.

The tree is a heavy cropper - with a tendency to fruit bi-ennially - i.e. to take  ‘year off’  - if the cropping is not restricted by thinning as soon as the fruitlets appear.

It stores well.

Developed at the famous East Malling Research Station in Kent, UK, in the 1960s. Jupiter is a cross between Cox's Orange Pippin and Starking Delicious.

It is more disease resistant than the Orange Pippin and is frost resistant.

It  earned the Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society in 1993.
