38. Czar - Cooking Plum

A very reliable cooking plum holding an RHS Award of Garden Merit
The plums are variable in size, but generally quite large
The skin is purple/black and the flesh a dark yellow, firm and with lots of juice.
The stone comes away easily - a useful attribute in the kitchen!.
Czar is used primarily as a cooking plum, but if left on the tree, the colour darkens, and they do become eatable raw.
The blossoms are white and larger than most other plum trees.
The tree is hardy and will grow well in most conditions.
A cross of Prince Engelbert and Early Prolific, bred by Rivers of Sawbridgeworth in 1874. Originally awarded an RHS Award of Garden Merit in 1993, it has been reconfirmed in all subsequent years including the 2013 trials.
It was named after the Czar of Russia
