56. Beth - Dessert Pear

Pyrus communis 'Beth'

The fruits are small to medium and conical but with a thick ‘neck’.

The skin is light green/yellow and smooth with almost no russetting’


The flesh is creamy white, very juicy and melting with a pleasant sweet flavour.


It is an upright but  compact tree and a reliable and heavy cropper which starts producing fruit at a young age.  

Beth pear was raised by Tydeman at East Malling Research Station, UK in 1938. It’s development was curtailed when World War II broke out and it was not until 1974 that it was named Beth and released for sale in the UK.


Beth is a cross between Beurre Superfin and Williams Bon Chretien. The former has delicious taste but the latter is more suited to our weather conditions. The cross between the two varieties has resulted in a delicious tasting pear which can be grown in most of the UK.
