Autumn Report 2016

Coneygree Orchard Warden’s Report.

Maintenance this year.

This year’s highlights have been the addition of the bench and one display board. (The second display area has been prepared and is ready in waiting)

There’s not really been a lot more to do, except monitor and fix any broken or failing items.

Plant life.

This season’s crop of Fruit has seen quite an increase from the trees, so much so that some fruit had to be picked a little early to preserve young limbs.

Two events worthy of note are the latest grafting’s and the black current transplants.

It’s good to see that all the newly grafted trees and alive and looking healthy. These have all been moved from the soft fruit cage to the newly created nursery (one of the former strawberry planters has been given a new purpose).

This move had dual purpose, not only did it give purpose to a redundant planter, but also freed up valuable space to allow the transplant of several Blackcurrant bushes. Our original enclosures for the blackcurrants have proven difficult to manage and maintain, so a move into the large soft fruit cage is welcome and will ease the harvesting and care.

Working Parties

We’ve had less official work parties this year, with no big projects it’s just been a case of sort and shine. Weeding around the soft fruits may not be much of a draw but the results always make for pleasant viewing.

Autumn/Winter Working Parties/Activities. (October-March)

Cage roof needs rolling up.

Final check of trees- picking fruit and address any damage.

Plan and plant new trees.

Finally.

A big thanks to John Morris, for keeping on top of the grass. The pathway has always remained presentable, which is very important as this Orchard is a showcase to the wider community. If anyone deserves a ride on mower…

Also, Tom’s woodworking alchemy should not go unmentioned; both the bench and the display board are majestic additions to the Orchard.

Steve, you’re not forgotten here either, the 3D labels are coming on nicely. Your patience is appreciated.
